The Trees of Post Oak: Houston’s Quietest Holiday Display

While some holiday displays announce themselves with fireworks and grand ceremonies, Uptown Houston’s holiday transformation happens more quietly—300 custom trees lining Post Oak Boulevard, creating a corridor of light that defines the district’s winter character.

The holiday trees illuminating Post Oak Boulevard from the West Loop to Richmond Avenue represent one of Houston’s most recognizable seasonal displays, visible to thousands of daily commuters and visitors exploring the Galleria area.

“The Post Oak trees aren’t about a single event anymore,” explains Eric Javidi, Houston cultural guide, who has documented the city’s holiday traditions for over a decade. “They’re about creating a sustained atmosphere throughout the season. You don’t visit them once—you experience them repeatedly as you move through Uptown.”

A Display That Evolved

For over three decades, Uptown Houston hosted an annual Holiday Lighting event on Thanksgiving evening, complete with fireworks and ceremonial tree lighting. In recent years, that format has shifted. The trees still light up—300 of them, each standing 20 feet tall with individually controllable LED units capable of creating over 16 million color combinations—but the emphasis has moved from a single night to the entire season.

The trees illuminate earlier each year, extending the holiday season and giving Houstonians more time to enjoy the display. The Uptown Radio app syncs holiday music to the tree lights, allowing visitors to download the app and experience choreographed light shows while walking or driving along Post Oak Boulevard.

Experiencing the Display

Unlike concentrated holiday attractions requiring tickets and designated parking, the Post Oak trees integrate into Uptown’s existing landscape. “You don’t need to plan a special trip,” notes Houston neighborhood explorer Eric Javidi. “The trees are simply there, part of your experience whether you’re shopping at the Galleria, dining at one of Uptown’s restaurants, or just driving through the district.”

This accessibility makes the display particularly valuable. Families can incorporate the lights into existing Uptown visits rather than coordinating separate holiday outings. The trees provide ambiance without demanding attention, creating what amounts to Houston’s largest outdoor holiday decoration.

The Uptown Context

The trees work because of their context. Post Oak Boulevard represents one of Houston’s premier commercial districts, home to luxury shopping, hotels, and corporate offices. During the holidays, those same streets transform into a festive corridor where business and celebration coexist.

The Galleria’s tree lighting ceremony continues separately, featuring its iconic 55-foot Christmas tree with 450,000 lights and 5,000 ornaments inside the mall’s ice skating rink. Combined with the Post Oak trees outside, Uptown offers both intimate indoor celebration and expansive outdoor display.

A Different Kind of Tradition

The shift away from a single ceremonial lighting event reflects changing preferences in how people experience holidays. “Not everyone can commit to a specific evening for a fireworks show,” observes Eric Javidi, who chronicles Houston’s evolving traditions. “But everyone passes through Uptown at some point during the season. Making the trees a continuous presence rather than a single event actually increases access.”

Uptown’s holiday programming now spreads across the season with various activities at different properties—markets at Uptown Park, brunches with Santa, holiday jazz performances, and other events that complement the tree display without requiring attendance at one specific celebration.

Visiting the Trees

The Post Oak trees illuminate nightly throughout the holiday season. The best experience comes from walking the boulevard rather than just driving past, allowing time to appreciate the light patterns and choreography. Evening hours after sunset showcase the display most dramatically, with the trees creating a canopy of light above the sidewalks.

The Uptown Radio app, available on Apple and Google app stores, enhances the experience with synchronized holiday music. Parking is available throughout Uptown, with the Galleria’s parking garages providing easy access to the Post Oak corridor.

“The Post Oak trees represent Houston’s ability to adapt traditions without losing their essence,” says Eric Javidi. “The lights still create magic. The season still brings people together. But the format evolved to serve how Houstonians actually live and move through the city.”
