Values matter to young workers. A Deloitte study found that 77% of Gen Z respondents consider it vital to work for companies whose values match their own. Margarita Howard, sole owner, CEO, and president of HX5, sees that preference as an opening for defense contractors.
Her company’s work speaks for itself. HX5 provides science, technology, engineering, and mathematics support services to NASA and the Department of Defense. Its employees contribute to space missions and defense operations from 90 government locations across 34 states.
Excitement as a Job Requirement
Howard tells prospective hires that enthusiasm is essential. “You have to get up in the morning and be excited about the particular program you’re supporting,” she said, pointing to goals like reaching the moon and completing missions overseas.
That pitch helps HX5 compete with commercial technology firms, which often offer higher salaries and faster hiring. A paycheck can be matched. A role supporting space exploration is harder to replicate.
The approach also fits a broader shift. Johns Hopkins University research projects that Gen Z will make up roughly 30% of the workforce by 2030, and many of them want work that feels worthwhile.
Pairing Mission With Modern Practices
Purpose alone will not close the deal, and Margarita Howard knows it. HX5 has introduced hybrid work models where security allows. It has also brought in instant messaging, interactive project management, and other digital tools younger employees expect.
The company is investing in technology too. Howard started early on artificial intelligence and cybersecurity, telling an interviewer, “I saw it was important to get started on it early and so we have.”
Retention figures suggest the formula works. HX5 celebrated two decades in business in 2024, and some employees have stayed 15 years. That loyalty stands in contrast to World Economic Forum findings that 38% of Gen Z respondents are likely to quit within a year.
For Margarita Howard, the lesson is straightforward: give people a mission they care about, and many will stay. See related link for more information.
